Wouldn't you like to have an authentic Singer hemstitcher in good condition for your Singer machine?
This auction features the accessory designed to produce "excellent hemstitching and picoting on lock stitch family sewing machines."   According to Singer's teacher textbook,
Machine Sewing
, "for ornamenting table sets, bedspreads and linens, a hemstitch design of a contrasting color is very effective and easily made."  Also, "the picot edge is the logical finish for ruffled collars, sleeve flounces, cottage curtains and gay bedroom furnishings.  In addition, the picot edge makes a fine foundation for hand rolled hems in chiffon, georgette or crepe de chin, permitting a professional-looking edge to be made on these flimsy materials."  Don't you just love it?  (NOTE:  A recent buyer described it as a "good attachment but does need some practice," so be patient!)
This attachment is part # 121387, which makes it suitable for all low shank, side attaching vintage Singer sewing machines.  However, the
special plate
provided in this set is part # 121392, which makes this useful only for the beloved Featherweights, class 221 machines, since the plate determines the proper operation of the attachment.  (Please be aware that this plate does NOT fit the 222!)  Also included in this set is the original special attaching screw.  And, finally, the special screwdriver # 121893 is present, which makes changing plates easier, and is often "missing in action" from these sets.
A rare feature of this set is 2 "parts" in what's commonly called the "blackside" finish, which some collectors prefer.  This finish came out
during WWII
when chrome was reserved for military use.  Singer called this finish "Black-Oxide" in reference to the process which produced the softly shining black color, and never used the term "blackside."  The attaching screwdriver and an "arm" of the main attachment have this finish, giving a dramatic coloration to the piece.
This accessory set is in
GOOD TO VERY GOOD
used condition, in my opinion, with minor signs of wear and age, but please examine all the pictures carefully to form your own opinion.  There are a couple of tiny spots on each piece which don't interfere with its operation.  There is also a spot of beginning rust on each edge of the teeth on the bottom section - see the last picture for one of these.  This attachment originally came with soft rubber "feet covers" which help the attachment do its job.  These usually got brittle with age, and are often missing completely - the ones here are soft and pliable, and may be replacements or original.
The authentic Singer cardboard storage box is good, with minor dings, scratches and scuffs
in the lid.  The bottom is discolored, and has a tear along one edge - I leave any taping to the new owner.  It's very
sturdy, and will protect your attachment and keep the parts together for many years to come.
The instruction booklet is complete and in
GOOD
used condition.
The pages have
wear, including strong folds and related minor creases, plus tearing along the center fold line.  There is light staining/foxing on the front cover, but the staples are clean and holding all pages securely together.
This attachment would be great to complete a collection of accessories, or for the sewer who loves fancy finishing
work
