Description
WAKEFIELD PATENT CASTROL MOTOR OIL PORCELAIN SIGN. Excellent condition. Not a remake. 75 plus years old I'm guessing. Maybe more. Very nice collectible piece of history in America. 1940's or 50's petroleum advertisement. Very heavy. Weighs One Full Pound!! Excellent condition. Not perfect but really clean. Only one mark seen on lower left. Castrol oil was formed in 1899 by Charles Wakefield. They originally made it as a lubricant for locomotives and heavy machinery. Porcelain is essentially baking powdered glass at a very high temperature and fusing it to rolled American steel. Over 1200 degrees Fahrenheit is needed in the kiln. This practice was first done in Europe back in the mid 1800's and then came to America in the late 1800's. Mostly discontinued at the turn of the century due to rising costs and the new availability of cheaper tin. Measures 7inches high by 10-1/4 across. Like I said it's very heavy. 1.04 LB. Make a decent offer, I do not collect petroleum and oil signs. It will be well wrapped and shipped Priority Mail. Sign
has been turned and rotated so that all sides are pictured. This is the actual item you will receive.
